| Some
90 minutes before its planned landing time at Paramaribo, the aircraft
suffered a failure of its center engine #2 and was forced to descend to a
lower altitude. Upon arrival, a passenger was pronounced dead after
symptoms of a heart attack probably as a result of the abnormal inflight
conditions. Passenger accounts indicate the MD-11 experienced unusual
vibrations prior or after the engine shutdown. |

aircraft safely diverted to Cochabamba following inflight electrical
problems one hour into flight. The flight has already a huge delay when a
different 727 - originally assigned for flight 557 - became inoperable due
to technical problems. Bolivian authorities criticized the pilotŽs
decision not to fly to the nearest available airport in this case:
Trinidad. An investigation is ongoing. |

On
take-off, the aircraft apparently suffered a partial collapse of its main
gear. After it skidded on its belly for about 100 metres, the aircraft came to a stop on
the runway. There were no reports about any injured persons. Local
press reported, the pilot radioed an engine failure had occured in the
late stages of the take-off after which the aircraft eventually became
momentarily airborne before it settled down again. There is also
speculation the flight engineer may have raised the undercarriage
prematurely. The airport was closed for a longer time until the An-24 was
removed by crane.

Probably
high winds and a slippery tarmac caused the empty A340 to roll foreward
until its nosegear ran against a blast fence where it came to halt. Damage
is said to be minimal.
