Some 90 minutes before its planned landing time at Paramaribo, the aircraft suffered a failure of its center engine #2 and was forced to descend to a lower altitude. Upon arrival, a passenger was pronounced dead after symptoms of a heart attack probably as a result of the abnormal inflight conditions. Passenger accounts indicate the MD-11 experienced unusual vibrations prior or after the engine shutdown.

There were no reports about any injured persons. Local press reported, the pilot radioed an engine failure had occured in the late stages of the take-off after which the aircraft eventually became momentarily airborne before it settled down again.
