pilots received clearance to descend to 35.000 but failed to maintain
them. At the same time, the Israeli widebody was flying westbound at
34.000 feet (FL 340). Both pilots were warned by TCAS forcing the french
pilots to stop their descent at 34.700 feet while the EL AL pilots began
to descent to avoid head-on collision. Both flights landed at their

| The
aircraft was on final approach to runway 04 (left) at the end of its
trans-atlantic flight when a male passenger tried to ignite a powder
substance on one his legs. A number of passengers subdued the man when
they saw smoke and flames on his knees. The fire was quickly put out and
the pilots continued for a safe emergency landing. The aircraft continued
to roll beyond the end of the runway coming to stop on the overrun zone.
The passenger in question - believed to be a 23 year-old nigerian moslem -
was taken into custody by local police and anti-terror forces. The man
suffered severe burn injuries on his legs. It is understood the man
attemped to carry out a terrorist attack and he is quoted by saying he has
connections to Al Qaeda terrorists in Yemen. FBI identified the substance
as pantaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a chemical mixture which can
combust violently if exposed to fire to a heavy shock. |

| Both
aircraft were on a reciprocal heading over northern Australia in the
cruiseflight at 37.000 feet (FL 370) when the pilots of Melbourne bound
Airbus A330 were forced to climb to a higher altitude to avoid the
approaching 737. The latter aircraft also changed its course to fly 10
miles right of track to gain more distance to the A330. There was a
violation of minimum seperation distance of 29 miles. Also the north-bound
737 was flying at a non-standard altitude. |

aircraft was on final approach in darkness to runway 36C(enter) at
Charlotte-Douglas Intl Airport. At the time, reduced visibility conditions
prevailed with visual ranges about 200 metres. It is understood the pilots
may have lost visual reference with the runway lights and drifted left on
touchdown. The left maingear touched the grass left of the runway when
hard right turn was applied to steer the aircraft back onto the runway.
According to local media reports, the right wingtip dropped and made
contact with the runway surface before an uneventful rollout was achieved.
The incident is under investigation. |

Whilst
the aircraft was undergoing engine run-ups in front of a TAP maintenance
hangar, it suddenly jumped off the chocks and foreward. It continued to
roll across the maintenance ramp until it impacted trees and lamp
standards when it travelled over soft ground. It is understood that there
were no injuries among the maintenance crew who was in the cockpit at the
time. The A310 received extensive damage to its leading edges, nosegear
and engine cowlings.
