the A320 was about 130 miles south of their destination, radio contact
was lost. The aircraft maintained its altitude and heading, flew
past the Minneapolis Airport until communicatons were re-established about
100 miles northeast of the city over the state of Wisconsin. The pilots
reported they were occupied with a heated dicscussion over airline policy
and have lost situational awareness. A safe approach and landing at
Minneapolis was later made. The incident is under investigation. According
to some aviation experts, the pilots may have fallen asleep at their
controls. |

The
aircraft sustained major damage on landing runway 24 when it hit the
runway hard resulting in damage to its right main gear. The pilots were
able to leave the runway but stopped at taxyway "Alpha" after
they received indication that a tire had burst. The right main gear leg
was bent to the side resulting in great stress to the wheels during ground
movement. The attachment to the underside of the wing also suffered damage
and fuel was leaking to the ground from ruptured wing tanks. At the time
of the landing, local weather consisted of ground fog reducing visibility
near the minima of a MD-11. Unconfirmed sources indicated the pilots never
had visual contact to the runway lights and may have missed a timely flare
maneuvre to ease their rate of descent.
