It is understood the flight departed Port Moresby at 09:53L to a flight
to the Kokoda Track carrying 13 persons, most of them Australian
hikers. There were no survivors. The crash site is about halfway between
Efogi - an intermediate landing point - and Kokoda. It seems likely the
aircraft encountered bad weather after take off. Reports indicate the pilot was already
in radio contact with Kokoda airfield when contact was suddenly lost. |

landing runway 03, the aircraft received heavy structural damage when it
touched down with excessive force. The pilots achieved a safe landing run
and were able to taxy to the ramp. There were reports about injured
persons. There were no indications about adverse weather conditions at the
time. Unconfirmed information reported a vertical acceleration of 4,6G on
first touchdown. One landing gear and one wing suffered extensive
structural damage. Despite its very young lifespan, a hull loss of the
aircraft has been taken into consideration. According to an airline
statement, the A320 will be taken out of service for repairs until
September. It is unclear yet, wether the incident happened on the final
flight of the day (S4 466 from Funchal) at 23:15 or the earlier from Ponta
Delgada which arrived on 18:15 at Lisbon. If the latter flight was the
accident flight, it would mean the A320 took off for two passenger flights
in a damaged condition. |

On
landing runway 35 in wet conditions, the pilots apparently lost
directional control and veered to the left of the runway. The ATR ran over
soft ground until it crashed directly into a former tower building which
is situated opposite of the main tarmac. It is understood that at
least one person (one of the pilots) was killed in the accident. A number
of other crewmembers and passengers sustained serious injuries. On board
were mostly tourists from Europe and Asia. The entire foreward fuselage is
destroyed. At the time the weather consisted of local thunderstorms and
occasional rainshowers but visibility was reported being "good".
NOTE: This is the 2nd time a Bangkok Airways aircraft crashed on
landing at Koh Samui after a DHC-8 crashed on approach in heavy rain in
November 1990, killing all 38 on board.
