Contradicting earlier reports, the Antonov 12 was in the late stages of its take-off run at Luxor, when - according to ground observers - flames were seen coming from an engine. The aircraft then only marginally gained altitude and crashed beyond the end of the runway where it was engulfed in flames. The An-12 came to rest about 700 meters behind the end of the runway. None of the five crewmembers survived the accident. The Antonov was on a ferry flight without freight from Africa to the Ukraine. Russian media reports the crew took off despite a fuel leak, forcing the crew to divert to Luxor earlier.
