On
final approach to runway 17R in bad weather conditions, the ATR sank below
the propper glidepath and contacted the ground short of the runway. The
undercarriage collapsed and a large part of the right wing broke off. The pilots
then lost directional control of
the aircraft which began to veer to the right of the runway. Ruptured fuel
tanks caused a fire which
quickly spread to the fuselage. Both pilots managed to got out of the ATR
before it was consumed by flames. At the time local weather consisted of
freezing fog and visibility was reduced to about 2 miles.
NOTE: This accidents marks the 17th hull loss of an ATR-42 and the 3rd
hull loss of an ATR of a FedEx feeder company within a year.

Both
aircraft collided on the runway at Makhachkala when the landing IL-76
(RA-76827) sliced its wing through the cockpit of the other IL-76 that was
waiting to taxy onto the runway for departure. The the collision a fire
erupted inside the cockpit which broke off completely from the rest of the
fuselage. It is understood all fatalities occured inside the departing
aircraft, which was empty at the time. Damage to the other aircraft is
unknown at present. At the time of the accident, visibility was reduced to
2 kilometers. It also appears the departing aircraft may have rolled
beyond the white holding mark. This would bring the aircraft closer to the
active runway than normal. The airport remained closed until the next day.

a regular flight between Buenos Aires and Salta (Argentine) the
aircraft´s flightpath was affected by a large thunderstorm system
covering nearly the entire northwest of Argentina. When the pilots deviate
around the storm, the aircraft suffered a total loss of most of its
navigation instruments leaving the pilots with only one operational
magnetic compass. After flying around in randomly directions, a Brazilian
Radar Station was able to track the MD-82 and guide it to Ponta Pora, the
nearest airport not affected by the storm, about 1000 km away from their
planned flight route. The pilots made a safe landing with a fuel reserve
less than 1 hour. The incident is under investigation. |

On
final approach to runway 06 (lengh: 950 m) , the aircraft lost height an
impacted terrain short of the runway. When the aircraft ran over the
runway threshold, it began to turn sharply to the left, left left
the runway again and collided with the airport wall where its foreward
fuselage broke off. It came to rest halfway in the Asian Spirit open-air
lounge. At least 20 passengers (among them two infants) received inuries.
Also three members of the airport ground staff were injured when they were
hit by debris. The airport was forced to close for about five hours. The
aircraft received substantial damage to its nose, wings, undercarriage and
engines. Damage is believed to be beyond economical repair. At the time winds were reported as strong and turbulent. NOTE:

| On
a supply flight for a British antarctic expedition, the aircraft is known
to have been involved in a landing accident at Tony Camp. All four on board, 3 crew and a
russian polar explorer have survived the crash. At the time of the
accident, the visibility was reported as "poor". After the pilot
performed a fly-by for a visual inspection of the landing site, visibility
suddenly dropped. The touchdown was extremely hard resulting in two jumps
before the BT-67 Turbo DC-3 came to a stop. The damage to wings, engines
and undercarriage apparently is beyond repair. The DC-3
was carrying supply parts for cross-country vehicles as part of the
British ICECAP research project. NOTE: In December 2007, another Turbo DC-3 (C-FMKB) was involved in a
landing accident new Mt. Petterson, Antarctica. It was repaired on the
spot and sucessfully flown out. |

On
landing runway 07, the aircraft ran off the end of runway coming to rest
on snow covered ground but within the overrun area. No injuries reported.
The airport was forced to close operations for a couple of hours. At the
time the weather consisted of continous snowfall and slippery ground
conditions.
NOTE: On January 26 2006 a Swiss Embraer E145 experienced a nearly
similar incident at Stuttgart when the aircraft overran the end of the
runway in icy conditions. In both cases, the aircraft was not fitted with
thrust reversers.
