On final NDB-approach to runway 27 at Smolensk-North Air Force, the aircraft clipped trees and crashed in a forest approximately 500 metres east of the airport. There were no survivors among passengers and crew. Among the dead was polish president Lech Kaczynski accompanied by his wife and high ranking government delegation. They were to attend the 70th anniversary of the Katyn masssacre near the city of Smolensk. At the time of the crash, local weather consisted of dense fog with temperatures about +1°C.  According ot russian news report, the visibility at the airport was only 400 metres the minimum visibility for the less-precise NDB-approach is 1.000 feet. Previous aircraft approaching Smolensk Air Base was a Yakovlev Yak-40 which landed and a military Ilyushin IL-76 which diverted after two unsuccessful approaches.

NOTE: This accidents marks the 59th hull loss of a Tupolev Tu-154. The last fatal accident of this type occured on 15th July 2009 in Iran.
